👉 These characteristics allow biofilms to develop on hydrophobic, hydrophilic, biotic or abiotic surfaces, which present a hydrated environment; and if it is not abundant, that they can conserve a minimum presence of nutrients necessary for their development (Marshall, 1992; Sauer et al., 2003). The ability to form biofilms does not seem to be restricted to some specific groups of microorganisms and it is considered that under suitable environmental conditions, the vast majority of bacteria can exist within biofilms (Donlan, 2002; Thomas and Nakaishi, 2006).
